The GST bill isn’t being passed through due to opposition demanding amendments in key areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for tea this evening to discuss the contentious GST bill.

The GST bill has been at the forefront of economic reform for the current government but isn’t being passed through due to opposition demanding amendments in key areas.

“We support GST bill, but Govt should look into amendments suggested by the opposition,” Tariq Anwar of the NCP said on Thursday.

The GST bill needs two-thirds majority in both houses to be passed and is now stuck in Rajya Sabha.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who needs Parliament approval for GST Bill in the winter session said he has spoken to “almost all Congress leaders” on the issue.

“We have absolutely no hesitation even at the level of Prime Minister. We have never had in it in the past, we don’t have it (now). He is willing to speak to everyone,” he had said.

“The Govt is assuring us that GST bill will strengthen the economy, so we support it,” BSP Leader Mayawati said on Thursday.
