Prime Minister Narendra Modi sees Indian economy benefiting immensely from the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). In an interview to CNN News 18, PM Modi said, “In the area of finance and taxation system, this is perhaps independent India’s biggest reform. There will be a huge change in India.” Highlighting the current problems with the taxation system, PM Modi said, “Right now very few people pay tax. Some people pay because they are patriotic, others for fear of the law. But, most people don’t pay tax because the system is very complex. With GST, you will have a simplified tax system. Now the common man can easily pay tax.”
“People joke on WhatsApp about the bills they have to pay when they go to restaurants. They highlight the food payment and the cess. With GST, all this will be simplified. Also, the state and centre will trust each other more. The entire federal structure will be strengthened,” he explained.
Asked about his government’s performance in the last two and a half years, Modi said, “I leave it to the people to evaluate how my government’s performance has been. Media evaluates too. I only urge that when you measure our performance, then keep in mind the dire state of the economy when my government came to power. People had little hope, there was an atmosphere of despair. The headlines in newspapers were full of how some or the other corruption case is coming forward. We have changed that. We have changed the atmosphere, now not only Indians are hopeful, but globally people are betting on India.” “A few years back people said that the I in BRICS will soon topple off. Now people see it as the shining spot. This is the change that we have brought about. And it is not about speeches, but the steps that we have taken on the ground,” he added.
